Recent Youth Highlights

2004 N.C.M.B. Conference at The Hope Center

“God has a plan for you!”

The theme of this years conference challenged us all. It was great to have the U.S. Mennonite Brethren Conference Executive Director here to give us encouragement and share wisdom. A big highlight was the 9 youth involved in the “Back to the Mennonite Brethren Future” drama. We attempted to portray the past, present, and future of the North Carolina Mennonite Brethren Churches set to the theme of the Back To The Future movies from the 1980’s. Michael and Bryan took on the biggest roles playing Marty and the Professor and had to work on 20 lines each. The youth had a lot of fun shopping for costumes at the Goodwill store and making the time machine car (which the adults seemed to enjoy during the play). Everyone was pretty nervous for the performance but they pulled it off with success.

I also did a presentation to cast the vision for the youth and children’s programs and tell people about some of the changes coming up (see upcoming events for the details). The conference showed us that God does have a plan and a bright future ahead for our churches.

F.R.O.G.

We worked through a Veggie Tales theme in September and learned about Forgiveness, Sharing, and Loving your neighbor. We learned new songs like “God is Good” and an active version of “This little light of mine”. I tried to leave the song “Father Abraham” out of the line up one night but the kids wouldn’t hear of it. This song continues to be a dizzying highlight.

5th Quarter

Septembers 5th quarter was held after the Hibriten victory over Ashe County. Our churches took 15 youth to the 1st United Methodist Church. Our youth were so excited about the basketball court that they didn’t get around to the pizza until everybody else had already had some. Sports before pizza is a good sign of a healthy lifestyle. Youth not playing B.ball relaxed downstairs and watched Chelsie and Taylor on the pool table

Eidse Family Discoveries

A monthly look into what this Canadian family has discovered about North Carolina and the USA.

A few things we noticed that y’all do a little differently down here.

bulletYou say hey, we say hi.
bulletYou say first grade, we say grade one.
bulletYou say soda, we say soft drink.
bulletYou say candy bar, we say chocolate bar.
bulletYou say Zee, we say Zed.
bulletYou hit possums on the road (won’t find those in Canada).
bulletYou use cash all the time. In Canada I would go for months without having a dollar in my wallet because everybody uses bank cards for everything.

Hope’s Needs

Volunteers

As we switch over to a new schedule in October our goal is to enlist 12 volunteers to help out on Thursday and Sunday evenings (6 volunteers for each). We have a lot of potential to grow our youth and children’s ministry but we need more people to do that. Check our web site for more details or
